Steam Rooms vs Saunas
Which Is Right For You?
When comparing steam rooms and saunas, the main difference comes down to the type of heat they produce. A sauna uses dry heat, reaching much higher temperatures, while a steam room uses moist heat with lower temperatures but very high humidity.
A sauna typically operates between 70–100°C with low humidity, creating an intense but dry environment where sweat can evaporate more easily. This makes it feel more breathable and is often preferred for muscle recovery, relaxation and improving circulation.
A steam room, on the other hand, runs at around 40–50°C but with close to 100% humidity, creating a warm, misty atmosphere. The moisture prevents sweat from evaporating, which can make the heat feel just as intense despite the lower temperature. Steam rooms are often favoured for their soothing effect on the skin and respiratory system, helping to open airways and hydrate the skin.
Ultimately, neither option is strictly “better”, it comes down to personal preference. If you prefer a hotter, drier environment, a sauna may suit you best. If you enjoy a gentler heat with added moisture and a spa-like feel, a steam room could be the better choice.
